2026.02.17 Reported: Noem's use of Coast Guard resources strains her relationship with the military branch - NBC News

NBC News reports that new guidance was issued to Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento to designate as its first priority the transport of detained immigrants within the U.S. The guidance moves search-and-rescue operations, counter-narcotics efforts, and Coast Guard training to lower priority levels.

Under the administration, Coast Guard aircraft have increased in use for immigrant deportations tenfold, with flights rising from 14 in June 2025 to 149 in November 2025. These shifts have created significant tension between DHS Secretary Noem and senior Coast Guard officials, with leadership expressing concern that border security is undermining the Coast Guard’s traditional core missions.
