DHS pauses and then rescinds Romania's Visa Waiver Program designation

  1. Original Date Announced

    May 2, 2025

DHS rescinded Romania's designation for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) after determining that granting VWP status could threaten VWP integrity as well as border and immigration security.

The Biden administration designated Romania as a VWP country on January 9, 2025. The designation was then paused by the Trump administration in March 2025 to allow DHS to assess the country's eligibility, and it has now been rescinded. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin noted that Romania may be reconsidered for VWP in the future and that DHS remains "grateful for Romania’s close partnership over the years to enhance security cooperation."
