DHS removes directive on face-recognition and face-capture technologies from website

  1. Original Date Announced

    February 14, 2025

According to Wired, DHS removed from its website DHS Directive 0026-11, “Use of Face Recognition and Face Capture Technologies,” approximately three weeks after President Trump’s January 2025 inauguration. Issued in September 2023, the directive, inter alia, states that DHS “does not use FR or FC technologies to profile, target, or discriminate against any individual for exercising their Constitutional rights or to enable systemic, indiscriminate, or wide-scale monitoring, surveillance, or tracking.” It also provides that facial recognition should not be used as the sole basis for civil-enforcement actions and set out a process for review and approval of FR and FC technologies.

The Directive was still available on the DHS website on February 14, 2025 but disappeared shortly thereafter. The DHS page on the directive is currently marked as “archived content.”
