September 22, 2025DHS Secretary Kristi Noem terminated Syria's designation for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which was to expire on September 30, 2025. The Secretary determined that “Syria no longer continues to meet the conditions for the designation of Temporary Protected Status” and that “it is contrary to the national interest to permit Syrian nationals . . . to remain temporarily in the United States.” The termination is effective November 21, 2025.

The New York Times reports that Syria's TPS termination will affect about 6,000 Syrians authorized to live and work in the United States, plus about 1,000 more Syrians with pending TPS applications as of August 2025.
