April 23, 2025The Appeal reported that the Department of Justice (DOJ) terminated all funding for the National Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Resource Center. A letter was sent by the PREA Director notifying staff of the funding rescission and stating DOJ is "working on an orderly shutdown of the Online Audit System."
PREA was passed unanimously by Congress in 2003. The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) then funded the Resource Center in 2010 to "hel[p] implement PREA Standards and suppor[t] the DOJ’s audits of jails, prisons, and detention centers, including immigration facilities."
Linda McFarlane, the executive director of Just Detention International, stated that “[t]he shuttering of the National PREA Resource Center is, quite simply, catastrophic for incarcerated people[.]"
