FAA announces "no-fly zone" around DHS operations

  1. Original Date Announced

    January 16, 2026

The Federal Aviation Authority ("FAA") issued a notice prohibiting unmanned-aircraft systems from operating within 3,000 feet laterally and 1,000 feet vertically of DHS "facilities and mobile assets," including ground vehicles and their escorts. The restricted airspace is classified as "national defense airspace." This notice implicates people using drones to film DHS operations, including arrests, transport activities, and other field activities. It states that those who fail to comply may be subject to federal criminal charges, and that their drones could be seized and destroyed by the government.
