Reported: Hundreds detained at Michigan port of entry as a result of wrong turns

  1. Original Date Announced

    April 24, 2025

NPR reports that at least 213 individuals have been detained at Ambassador Bridge port of entry in Michigan between January and March 2025. Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) held a press conference with the Michigan Immigrants' Rights Center (MIRC) and the ACLU of Michigan to provide details, including that "[a]t least 90% of the detentions were people who made a wrong turn and drove onto the bridge by accident." Those detained include a dozen families and, according to CBP, 40 "known Tren de Aragua" members.

NPR received information that at least some detainees have been kept for days in "windowless office spaces near the bridge" and denied appropriate food, diapers, sleeping arrangements, and first aid. They have also purportedly been denied access to lawyers, with MIRC describing the detention sites as "a complete blackhole of information."

The Detroit News reports that one of the individuals detained after mistakenly crossing into Canada and attempting to cross back into Michigan was Ricardo Prada Vásquez, who "was flagged by the government 'as a designated a public safety threat [and] confirmed member of [Tren de Aragua]" at the border and subsequently removed to El Salvador. His family had no information about this whereabouts for weeks and denies that he is a member of the gang.
