On October 19, 2022, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee preliminarily approved a class action settlement in Zelaya v. Hammer, 3:19-cv-62 (E.D. Tenn.). The lawsuit challenged a 2018 raid on a meatpacking plant in Bean Station, TN, which was carried out by over 100 armed federal agents from DHS and the IRS, along with local law enforcement agents. The settlement provides for over $1 million to the Latinx workers who were detained during the raid. Class members can also request a letter from ICE confirming their status as part of the class, which they can attach to any application for immigration relief.
