EO 14167: "Clarifying the Military's Role in Protecting the Territorial Integrity of the United States"

    Executive Order (EO) 14167, "Clarifying the Military's Role in Protecting the Territorial Integrity of the United States," declares that "the Armed Forces of the United States [will] prioritize the protection of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the United States along our national borders." To implement this policy, the Secretary of Defense is directed to:

    • no later than 10 days after the date of this order, deliver to POTUS a revision to the Unified Command Plan assigning United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) the mission to "seal the borders and maintain the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security of the United States by repelling forms of invasion including unlawful mass migration, narcotics trafficking, human smuggling and trafficking, and other criminal activities;" and
    • on the effective date of this order, add to the Contingency Planning Guidance and Guidance for the Employment of the Force:
      • a Level 3 planning requirement for USNORTHCOM to carry out the above mission with a commander's estimate due to the Secretary of Defense within 30 days;
      • a campaign planning requirement for USNORTHCOM to provide steady-state southern border security in accordance with the above mission; and
      • continuous assessments of all available options to protect U.S. sovereign territory from mass unlawful entry and impingement on national sovereignty and security by foreign nations and transnational criminal organizations.

      2025.01.24 Active duty forces to bolster security at U.S. southern border

      The Pentagon through U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) is deploying approximately 1,500 active-duty troops from U.S. Army and Marine Corps to the southern border to augment approximately 2,500 service members already deployed and supporting CBP's southern border mission. Military forces will support detection and monitoring efforts and repair and replace physical barriers.

      Texas Governor Abbott issues EO GA-53 directing the Adjutant General of Texas to develop and prepare within 30 days an operational plan to assist USNORTHCOM in "repelling the invasion, securing the Texas-Mexico border, and neutralizing the non-state actors infiltrating Texas."
