Original Date Announced
March 24, 2025According to CNN, FBI Director Kash Patel has outlined plans to reassign as many as 1,000 Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) agents to the FBI to assist on border-related criminal enforcement with no end date for the reassignment. This statement has been disputed by an ATF spokeswoman who says agents will not be reassigned to the FBI, only to other ATF field offices, and that these reassignments will be "temporary."
The move would represent a major cutback of the ATF, which has previously been targeted by gun rights groups who believe its work infringes on Second Amendment rights. It also raises speculation over whether Trump plans to merge at least part of ATF with the FBI, given that Patel is currently the Director of both agencies.
