Reported: Asylum applications are dismissed due to omitted credible fear interviews

  1. Original Date Announced

    August 10, 2025

NPR reports that dozens of asylum seekers--many of whom entered the U.S. between 2019 and 2022--have begun receiving letters from USCIS notifying them that their asylum cases have been dismissed because they not receive a credible fear interview on arrival. Applicants began receiving the letters in July 2025 and they vary in substance: Some tell applicants that ICE will reach out to schedule a credible fear interview and others instruct applicants to report to ICE and request the interview. As NPR notes, many of these applicants likely did not receive a credible fear interview due to the lack of asylum officers available during the COVID-19 pandemic.
