April 13, 2025On April 13, 2025, Border Patrol agents boarded an Amtrak Empire Builder train in Havre, Montana and questioned passengers about their citizenship status. A CBP spokesperson stated the action was performed to support "immediate border enforcement efforts" and to prevent "smuggling and criminal organizations from exploiting existing transportation hubs to travel to the interior of the United States." An interviewed passenger who is "a longtime attorney and district court judge for the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arika Tribe" stated: "[H]e has been riding the train for decades and he has never seen federal officers come on the train to ask if people are citizens," adding that "a conductor on the train Sunday told him that in the conductor’s 40 years, he has never seen anything like it."
