Reported: DHS offers voluntary departure to unaccompanied children from noncontiguous countries

  1. Original Date Announced

    July 23, 2025

CNN reports that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) personnel have been directed to ask unaccompanied children--whether from contiguous (i.e., Mexico or Canada) or noncontiguous countries--encountered in immigration enforcement operations whether they want to voluntarily depart the United States. If a child agrees, agents will turn that child over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for removal. If ICE doesn’t pick the child up from CBP custody within 72 hours, agents will refer the child to HHS.

Two sources said the new policy is designed to apply to children ages 14 to 17.
