March 9, 2025Bloomberg Law reports that DOJ plans to drop a Biden-era lawsuit alleging sexual abuse by employees of Southwest Key Programs. Southwest Key is the largest private housing-provider for unaccompanied migrant children in the U.S., and has received over $3 billion in federal funding. The initial complaint, filed in July 2024, alleged that Southwest Key employees sexually abused and harassed children aged 5 to 17 at its shelters over an eight-year span. The dismissal reportedly followed an email from Southwest Key’s attorneys to DOJ officials that argued that additional protections for detainees would “actually incentivize illegal crossings at the southern border.” United States v. Southwest Key Programs, No. 1:24-cv-00798 (W.D. Tex.).
