August 14, 2025The New York Times reports that "Florida will soon open a second state-run immigration detention center," which will be branded the "Deportation Depot." The detention center will operate out of the Baker Correctional Institution near Sanderson, FL, which was closed in 2021. The facility can house about 2,000 detainees. Governor DeSantis said that equipping the facility would cost around $6 million, "a fraction of the $330 million that the state has spent on contracts for" the "Alligator Alcatraz" Everglades facility. The federal government will reimburse Florida for all of its detention-center spending.
