December 17, 2025The Daily Mail reports that HHS Secretary Jim O'Neill issued letters demanding sponsors of immigrants repay any public benefits spent on those immigrants. Although federal law requires sponsors to repay means-tested public benefits, the law is rarely enforced. At least 10 repayment demand letters have been signed regarding sponsored individuals enrolled in Medicaid. The letters warn that anyone who fails to pay will face federal action "by all available means." The measure follows a fraud scandal in Minnesota in which federal prosecutors charged over 70 people, many from the Somali community, with stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from government programs.
