Reported: HHS demands sponsors of immigrants repay public benefits

  1. Original Date Announced

    December 17, 2025

The Daily Mail reports that HHS Secretary Jim O'Neill issued letters demanding sponsors of immigrants repay any public benefits amounts spent on those immigrants. Although federal law requires the sponsors of immigrants to repay means-tested public benefits, the law is rarely enforced. At least ten repayment demand letters have been signed that relate to sponsored individuals enrolled in Medicaid. The letters warn that anyone who fails to pay up will face aggressive federal action "by all available means." The measure follows the alleged fraud scandal in Minnesota, in which federal prosecutors charged over 70 people, many from the Somali community, with stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from government welfare programs.
