August 7, 2025The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced "a new partnership with the state of Louisiana to expand ICE detention space by up to 416 beds." The facility will be housed within the Louisiana State Penitentiary, otherwise known as Angola Prison and now dubbed "Louisiana Lockup." DHS states that the "agreement was made possible by the One Big Beautiful Bill" based on increased funding for immigration-detention facilities.

2025.08.07 Reported: Trump Plans to Send Immigrant Detainees to Notorious Louisiana Prison - WSJ
According to The Wall Street Journal, Angola was selected to save on costs of constructing new facilities; it is "notorious" and was "once known as the bloodiest prison in the country." Critics object to placing immigrants in the same facility where "more than 70% of the roughly 4,300 people currently housed . . . are serving a life sentence and over 90% [are] violent offenders."
