Reported: Trump administration targets 14 blue states and D.C. with sweeping federal funding review

  1. Original Date Announced

    January 22, 2026

CNN reports that the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued a budget data request to almost all federal departments, directing them to supply data on federal funding provided to 14 states and Washington, DC, "as well as their localities, institutions of higher education and nonprofit organizations operating or performing award activities there." The states include California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Washington, DC. All of the states voted for Democratic nominee and former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election and 12 currently have Democratic governors.

The news comes after Trump promised to cut off funding to sanctuary cities during a speech in Detroit, stating that "[s]tarting February 1, we’re not making any payments to sanctuary cities or states having sanctuary cities because they do everything possible to protect criminals at the expense of American citizens." The OMB memo, however, states that the purpose of the data request is to “facilitate efforts to reduce the improper and fraudulent use of those funds" and "does not involve withholding funds."
