Reported: Trump administration uses 18 USC § 111 to arrest protestors

  1. Original Date Announced

    February 19, 2026

CNN reports that the administration is increasingly relying on 18 USC § 111 to arrest protestors. This provision makes it illegal to "forcibly" assault, resist, oppose, impede, intimidate, or interfere with a federal officer performing their official duties. Prosecutors have filed 580 cases citing the statute in the year since inauguration, a 40% increase from President Biden's last year in office. The number of individuals actually arrested is expected to be even higher, as many protestors have been arrested then released before charges were filed. Many cases have resulted in prosecutors dropping the charges, or plea deals, civil citations, acquittals, or dismissals.
