On March 12, 2019, USCIS Director Francis Cissna announced plans for closure of the international field offices. Acting Director Cuccinelli scaled back this decision, keeping certain offices open. Prior to International Field Office closures, USCIS International Operations maintained international field offices in 24 U.S. embassies and consulates in 21 countries.
