USCIS reduces validity period of certain Employment Authorization Documents

  1. Original Date Announced

    December 4, 2025

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that it is updating the maximum validity periods for certain Employment Authorization Documents (EADs), which provide noncitizens with temporary permission to work in the U.S. This update reduces the maximum validity period for both initial and renewal EADs from five years to 18 months for noncitizens admitted as refugees or granted asylum or withholding of deportation or removal, as well as for noncitizens with pending applications for asylum, withholding of removal, adjustment of status, and some other forms of immigration relief. This change applies to EAD applications pending or filed on or after December 5, 2025.

With respect to noncitizens granted parole and those with a pending application for Temporary Protected Status or a grant of TPS, validity period of EADs is limited to one year or the end date of the authorized period of parole or grant of Temporary Protected Status, whichever is shorter. This change applies to EAD applications pending or filed on or after July 25, 2025.

The change is reflected in Volume 10, Part A, Chapter 4, Section C(1) of the USCIS Policy Manual.
