DHS Secretary creates panel to examine best practices for families and children in CBP custody

    DHS Secretary Nielsen tasks the Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC) with creating a CBP Families and Children Custody Panel. The panel will "provide findings and recommendations on the best practices from Federal, State, and local organizations regarding care for families and children in CBP custody." [ID #437]

      Under the second Trump administration, Secretary Noem made changes to HSAC's structure and membership: (1) reduce membership from 40 to 35; (2) change members' terms to a three-year appointment, from a range of one to three-year terms; and (3) remove co-chairs to now reflect a Chair and Vice Chair.

    2021.03.26_DHS Secretary Mayorkas Letter to HSAC

    Secretary Mayorkas sent a letter to 32 HSAC members notifying them that their terms had been ended and that they would no longer be serving on the committee. The Secretary noted that he was "considering how the HSAC can bring the greatest value to the Department" and that he will "will reconstitute the HSAC in the next few weeks, once the new model has been developed."
