2026.06.20 Reported: Memo by Rubio Approved Detention of Immigrant Who Criticized Trump Ally - New York Times

The New York Times reports that the administration detained a Colombian immigrant and political activist after Secretary of State Marco Rubio determined that his continued presence in the U.S. undermined U.S. foreign-policy interests. Franklin Humberto Coral Garrido, known as Beto Coral, had criticized a Trump-endorsed candidate in Colombia’s presidential election and was arrested by ICE while returning to his home in Phoenix with his minor son. Rubio’s memo cited Coral’s political activity opposing the candidate and his support for Colombia’s Petro government as grounds for deportation. Coral, who has a pending asylum application, is awaiting removal proceedings.
