Reported: ICE stops sharing locations of detainees with final removal orders

  1. Original Date Announced

    September 21, 2026

Associated Press reports that on September 15, 2026, ICE removed thousands of current detainees with final removal orders from its Online Detainee Locator System (ODLS). The ODLS is used by attorneys and family members to locate people in detention. The Washington Post further reports that ICE has been instructed not to share location information about detainees with their attorneys or family members.

Without access to such information, it will be more difficult for detainees challenging their detention and/or removal to file habeas petitions in the proper venue. Persons detained at the detention facility in Adelanto, California, or at temporary holding facilities in Minneapolis, New York City, or suburban Chicago, will continue to be listed because federal judges have ordered ICE to provide lists of detainees.

  • 2026.09.26 ICE Begins Electronically ‘Disappearing’ People in Custody: What You Need to Know - American Immigration Council

The American Immigration Council reports that at least 1.4 million people have final orders of removal and the number of detention centers used by ICE has increased by 91% under the current administration. With more than one in ten people being transferred out of state within 24 hours of arrest and at least 170 illegal deportations occurring since January 2025, the new policy creates barriers for families and attorneys attempting to locate and contact detainees.
