June 1, 2026The Associated Press (AP) reports State Department plans to cut U.S. embassies processing visas in Africa from almost 50 to 20. There is not a set date for the change, but it is expected to occur in June 2026. Applicants from countries without a visa-processing embassy will have to travel abroad for visa processing.
The remaining visa-processing embassies will likely be located in "Abidjan, Ivory Coast; Accra, Ghana; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Cape Town, South Africa; Dakar, Senegal; Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania; Djibouti, Djibouti; Johannesburg, South Africa; Kampala, Uganda; Kigali, Rwanda; Kinshasa, Congo; Lagos, Nigeria; Lome, Togo; Luanda, Angola; Malabo, Equatorial Guinea; Monrovia, Liberia; Nairobi, Kenya; Port Louis, Mauritius; Praia, Cape Verde; and Yaounde, Cameroon." Embassies in the remaining countries will be "limited in the services they can offer."
