August 11, 2026According to a suit filed by twenty-one states and the District of Columbia, the Trump administration issued a demand to the Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) on August 11 to turn over the Commercial Driver License Information System (CDLIS) for immigration enforcement and other purposes by August 17, or face termination of all federal funding. The CDLIS contains over 17 million driver records, including sensitive personal information, based on data provided by the states. Plaintiffs allege that the government's demands violate privacy statutes, the APA, and the Spending Clause, and seek declaratory and injunctive relief. Illinois v. Department of Transportation, No. 1:26-cv-2547 (E.D. Va.).
