DOS revokes Brazil's U.S. ambassador's visa

  1. Original Date Announced

    August 4, 2026

CBS reports that the State Department revoked the visa of Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, Brazil's ambassador to the United States. The U.S. said the visa would be reinstated immediately if Brazil grants diplomatic approval for President Trump's nominee for U.S. ambassador to Brazil, Daniel Perez, the current Republican Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives and a close ally of Marco Rubio. Brazil has withheld approval for Perez, essentially blocking him from the position, partially because the U.S. announced its pick for ambassador before submitting a request to Brazil.

This is the latest diplomatic dispute between the two countries, including Brazil's denial of visas to two U.S. officials in July after accusing them of attempted election interference and the U.S.'s 25% tariffs on imports from Brazil.
